An Ist Rune can pull you in two directions in D2R: slot it into suitable gear for Magic Find, or save it for a Runeword such as Call to Arms or Infinity. Before committing one, look at your character's gear and the D2R Ladder Items you plan to use, because the best choice depends on what your build needs next.
What does an Ist Rune do in D2R
Ist is valued for the Magic Find it can add when socketed in suitable equipment. For a character that spends most of its time farming, that makes it more than a rune to keep tucked away: it can become part of the gear you wear while searching for rare and unique items.
That said, Magic Find is only one part of a farming setup. Your character still needs to get through fights comfortably, so don't treat an Ist socket as an automatic upgrade over every other option. Consider what you would give up on the item and how often you actually wear it.
I'd start by checking the gear used on my regular farming runs rather than the pieces sitting in storage. A socketed item has to earn its place in the setup; an attractive Magic Find choice matters less if the character feels awkward every time a fight starts.
Which D2R Runewords use an Ist Rune
Call to Arms and Infinity both use an Ist Rune. That gives Ist a second job beyond Magic Find and creates a practical choice: spend it on equipment now, or keep it for a larger Runeword project.
Before putting your Ist into an item, check how close you are to the Runeword you want. If you're already gathering its other components, using the rune for Magic Find may delay that goal. If a Runeword remains a distant plan, a useful farming piece may be the more satisfying choice for now.
Keep the whole character in view. A Runeword is a gear commitment, not simply a place to use a valuable rune. Think about which character will use it, what part of the setup it will occupy, and how it fits your plans before deciding where the Ist goes.
Should you use an Ist Rune for Magic Find or save it
Use the Magic Find route when your current character is comfortable farming and you have suitable equipment you expect to keep using. It puts the rune to work immediately and supports the hunt for rare and unique items.
Save it when Call to Arms or Infinity is already your next major goal. In that case, the temptation to improve a farming item today has to compete with a piece of gear you're actively working toward. There's no need to make that call the moment an Ist enters your stash.
Ist's appeal is its flexibility: it can support your farming gear or form part of a Runeword plan. Check your current setup, decide which goal matters more, and then buy D2R Runes only if you need them for the project you've chosen.
